Safety signs play a crucial role in any workplace to give clear guidelines. They communicate and reinforce safety instructions to anyone who may be exposed to hazards in the workplace. Some safety colours may include the following:

  1. Red- red is a prohibition or danger sign that alerts people to present dangers in the environment. It may be used with white to mark dangerous locations or surfaces. Red is also used to mark emergency switches, flammable liquids and construction hazards.
  2. Yellow- As a safety colour, yellow warns people to be cautious of surrounding objects such as flammable materials and electrical wires. It is also used to warn people against slipping and falling incidents that are common in many facilities.
  3. Green- Also a safety colour, green is used to mark emergency exits and first aid equipment. It also offers sanitary guidelines and unsafe conditions.
  4. Blue- Blue communicates that all personnel should engage in specific behaviour, such as wearing protective gear. It is a mandatory colour but not necessarily a warning colour.

Safety signs comply with the AS 1319:1994 standard that dictates the use and design of safety signs in the workplace. This law requires occupational environments to provide warnings of any hazards in the workplace and any emergency information as it falls due. The failure to install safety signs constitutes a breach of law and safety procedures. These signs should include safety signs, emergency signs, danger signs and warning signs, to mention a few. Each type of sign has a different colour, which helps communicate clear information. While every workplace has various hazards, the main goal is to ensure the worker's safety.
